America has a loneliness epidemic. Here are 6 steps to address it

Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Health

Summary

The U.S. Surgeon General’s report, “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation,” identifies loneliness as an emerging public health issue. With various influences such as technology and society’s rapid pace of change, people are experiencing unprecedented levels of loneliness. This growing disconnect has severe repercussions, including heightened risks of depression, anxiety, suicide, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and other mental and physical health issues.

While technology enables a greater outreach, it also acts as a replacement for in-person interactions, especially among young people aged 15-25, exacerbating feelings of loneliness. People may be surrounded by many others, but the quality of their connections is what dictates loneliness. As a response, the report proposes 6 pillars to address the loneliness epidemic:

1) Strengthening social infrastructure and investing in public and community programs;
2) Implementing pro-connection public policies at all government levels;
3) Mobilize the public health sector to address issues as a result of loneliness;
4) Reforming digital environments;
5) Deepening our knowledge through more robust research into the issue; and
6) Cultivating a culture of connection.
