Good mental health can improve various aspects of people’s lives such as coping skills, relationships, educational achievement, employment, housing and economic potential, and can help reduce physical health problems. The physical and social environments of urban life can both positively and negatively contribute to an individuals mental health and wellbeing. Furthermore, cities have a higher rate of mental health problems compared to rural areas. Three reasons why people in cities may experience increased mental health problems are due to pre-existing factors, social factors, and environmental factors. A large number of people migrate to cities in search for better economic and social opportunities, and distance from past negative experiences. When moving to the city, people can experience physical and psychological segregation into neighbourhoods that may be characterized by poverty and other social challenges. Increasing stimuli, and stripping away protective factors are two key ways that affect people in an urban setting.
