A Three-Bed, Two-Bath, One Open Street Apartment
Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Engagement Parks & Public SpaceSummary
34th Avenue in the Jackson Heights neighbourhood transformed into a popular and attractive space with a pedestrian plaza and wide bike lanes as part of New York City’s Open Streets program. Beginning in April 2020, the City designated certain streets as car-free spaces, including 34th Avenue, to provide the public with more outdoor space during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, during the city’s “Paseo Park” makeover, the street became a permanent pedestrian-only space. 34th Avenue is now the city’s longest Open Street (stretching 26 blocks) and is widely acclaimed as the “Gold standard of Open Streets,” despite the public’s initial opposition to the program. It is often highlighted by real estate brokers and agents as an attractive amenity in listings for prospective home buyers and renters. Other Open Streets, such as the one on Berry Street in Williamsburg, are also being listed as real estate amenities as they have a similar appeal as subway stops and parking.
