From Sin City to the City of Angels, building starts on high-speed rail line

Mobility Smart Cities Year in Review

Summary

The United State’s first true high-speed passenger rail line by Brightline West is currently in the works to connect millions of people between Las Vegas and Los Angeles before the Summer Olympics 2028. These electric-powered trains are intended to reach speeds of 186 mph, similar to Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains, and have a budget of $12 billion with $6.5 billion in backing from the Biden administration. It is forecasted that the project will carry 11 million one-way passengers annually, or approximately 30,000 daily. Fares will be exponentially cheaper than airline travel costs and trains will be equipped with washrooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales, and the option to check luggage. Additionally, most of the planned new railway tracks will be built in the median of Interstate 15 in hopes of relieving congestion on this major highway.
