Why Denver is Struggling To Keep Up With Its Economic Boom
Economic Development Housing VideoSummary
This video examines the housing and labor shortages in Denver, Colorado as the city addresses the challenges of its rapid economic and population growth. Between 2010 and 2022, about 115,000 people moved to Denver–an increase of 20%. Although a city with thriving technology and sports and entertainment sectors, Denver is struggling to house its population boom. The housing shortage is attributed to several factors, such as a lack of construction workers to build homes, a mismatch between jobs and skills, and housing unaffordability. A few ways the state plans to address these challenges is by incentivizing construction workers through bills and scholarships, legalizing marijuana and using the tax revenue to fund housing developments, and investing in public transportation to connect workers to areas where their skills are most needed.
