A Fast Company article discusses Paul Jesman’s solution to the housing crisis in California. This real estate broker has propped up buildings with accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Jesman has specifically been renovating Dingbat apartment buildings. These apartments are vernacular to Los Angeles’s architecture but have been known to collapse during big earthquakes. The ADUs would act as structural support for Dingbats while adding more housing stock to the neighbourhoods. Constructing ADUs not only generates profits but also addresses the region’s housing crisis and creates earthquake-resistant buildings. Various cities around the U.S. have updated their zoning and building policies to allow ADUs as mandated seismic retrofits are becoming common. While ADUs are proving effective, it is not a universal solution. The type of street and amount of parking affect the construction of ADUs.
