Slow-release fertilizer brings ‘dramatic’ reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

Climate Change, Energy & Pollution

Summary

A recent research done in P.E.I has prompted some local potato farmers to switch over to
enhanced fertilizers. Trials have shown reduced greenhouse gas emissions to as much as 60%
while field production remains stable. These fertilizers slowly release nitrogen over the course of
the season when plants need it. The controlled release of nitrogen helps in reducing excess
leakage into the soil. The study was conducted by Living Labs for over three years, with the
involvement of the federal and provincial governments, P.E.I. growers, and private industry and
watershed groups. As Agriculture is one of the primary sources of nitrous oxide, many expect
the switch to enhanced fertilizers can assist the federal government’s goal of reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
