A report by JLL has identified the top 10 most innovative cities in the world. These cities were ranked based on a series of criteria revolving around innovation and talent. In addition, they were selected because the right combination of talent and innovation in the city leads to higher productivity and more economic growth.
The criteria for measuring innovation includes: Foreign Direct Investment in high-tech industries, levels of venture capital, expenditure on Investment and Development, and the number of international patent applications. The criteria for measuring the concentration of talent includes: quality of higher education, standard of education among the population, percentage of population between the ages of 20 and 40, and percentage of jobs in high-tech industries. The 10 cities identified as the most innovative are: (1) San Francisco, (2) Tokyo, (3) Singapore, (4) Beijing, (5) London, (6) San Jose, (7) Paris, (8) New York, (9) Boston, and (10) Seoul.
